In September 1989 14 Parachute Battalion group carried out a second amphibious exercise, dubbed Exercise Vlakwater, in the Saldanha Bay area. Unlike the Regular Army and National Guard models in the first Corps Area, the 78th Division did not participate within the Second Corps Area maneuvers and the first Army maneuvers of 1935, 1939, and 1940 as an organized unit as a result of lack of enlisted personnel and gear. 12 February 1945: III Corps. 2 February 1945: V Corps, First Army, 12th Army Group. Following this, on 1 January 1982, Colonel F. J. Bestbier took up the post of the first formally appointed commanding officer of 44 Parachute Brigade. On the time du Plessis was the commanding officer of the Orange Free State Command (OFS Cmd) and had earlier expertise serving in 1 Parachute Battalion. On 24 September 1980 the Brigade HQ was re-activated with Breytenbach as un-appointed Officer Commanding and moved to the farm Haakdoringfontein at Murrayhill close to Wallmansthal, some 35 kilometers north of Pretoria. After transferring to Murrayhill in 1980, 44 Parachute Brigade experienced relatively little organizational growth regardless that the person items within the brigade remained operationally energetic.
